SPAN Parent Advocacy Network is the Parent Training and Information Center for New Jersey and we encourage families from any part of NJ to register and attend. This is only open to the first 20 registrants. We offer this quarterly in English and in Spanish.

Soluciones Positivas para las Familias es un programa de varias sesiones basado en evidencia, diseñado para ayudar a las familias a satisfacer las necesidades socioemocionales de sus hijos desde el nacimiento hasta los 5 años, al mismo tiempo que obtienen recursos para afrontar comportamientos. Los materiales de capacitación se basan en el modelo piramidal utilizado en los Centros de Educación Infantil. We will discuss: -The continuum of VR services, including Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) and VR Transition Services -VR Transition Services and who can receive them. -What an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) includes and the role students, youth and parents can play in the development of the IPE.

We will discuss the potential for changes in physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning after brain injury and how these impact current and new relationships. We will highlight the importance of communication in expressing wants, needs, and expectations to navigate new or existing relationships. Individuals can be conflicted about what to say or whether to share information about their brain injury when meeting new people. We will explore this personal decision about how much to disclose. Health care providers will learn ways to sensitively discuss relationships and intimacy after brain injury. The workshop will cover the basics of guardianship, limited guardianship, conservatorship, and other surrogate decision-making options, with an aim towards attaining the maximum possible independence for your child while preserving vital protections for important decision-making. We will discuss how to secure guardianship and the importance of medical directives and durable power of attorney for those with capacity to make some decisions, but not all. We will also discuss the role and responsibilities of the guardian, and how to pass guardianship to a successor when parents are no longer here. This 90-minute presentation includes a Q&A.
